Visual communication designer and artistic researcher working across photography, intermedia practice and digital infrastructures. Based in Ljubljana.

Rok Černezel

I grew up in Šmarje pri Jelšah and am now based in Ljubljana. My background began in media production and photography, but my practice gradually moved toward conceptual, socially critical and intermedia work. I am interested in what happens when a photographic image becomes part of a larger spatial, technological or social system.

I studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO), University of Ljubljana. A study exchange at Academie Minerva in Groningen was formative in bringing my long-standing interest in technology into contact with photographic thinking. Since then, I have worked across spatial installation, sound, moving image, augmented reality, 3D and digital development, treating these not as separate disciplines but as methods that can be combined around a research question.

This trajectory led from kubus, a project concerned with repression, surveillance and public space, through kubus 2.0 and its critique of algorithmic identification, toward art.kubus, a research-development platform for examining how art can be documented, distributed and encountered across the gallery, the street and the web. I approach decentralisation critically: not as a ready-made solution, but as a way to test how access, visibility, authorship and participation might be organised differently. The same questions form the basis of my scientific monograph Decentralizirane umetniške platforme (Kulturni center Maribor, 2026), developed from my master's research.
